| Abstract: | Collective assessment of the results of five recent small-scale projects in the vicinity of Galava Roman fort on the outskirts of Ambleside, and in and around the extramural settlement, with the aim of providing a more accurate perspective on the archaeology of the extramural settlement. Evidence from previous work is also assessed. The paper considers evidence for the size, limits and nature of the settlement, the date and continuity of occupation, and the relationship of its chronology with that of the fort.
