Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The paper aims to reconstruct, as far as is possible from surviving evidence, a picture of the estates possessed by Calder Abbey and of changes in these possessions over time. The story of the Abbey's foundation is recounted, and the documentary evidence of its subsequent history is examined in relation to the Abbey's possessions up to and including the Valor Ecclesiasticus of 1535 and the Abbey's dissolution the following year. The evidence for the existence, in the past, of an Abbey cartulary is also discussed. | ||
