Abstract: |
Examines documentary evidence for the existence and working of some thin coal seams at Reagill, Sleagill and Newby, more than twenty miles away from the coal measures of the West Cumberland coalfield, in the Yoredale Group of rocks about six miles west of Appleby. This is supported by fieldwork undertaken at Reagill in August 1989 and checked in July 2003, which revealed traces of coalmining, including spoil heaps which could be linked to nineteenth-century land ownership.
