Abstract: |
Paper describing excavations at the site of a large permanent Roman fort and its attendant vicus, set in open country to the south of Wigton. The work was preliminary to further large-scale fieldwork, and aimed to assess the problems likely to be encountered and establish the earliest and latest material in the vicus. During a first phase of excavation it was found that much plough damage had occurred. However, the presence of two building types was indicated: substantial stone buildings with flagged floors were backed by wattle-and-daub houses with clay floors. After two clear periods of destruction, rebuilding seemed to have taken place on exactly the same pattern as before. Further floors and some clay extraction pits were recorded during a second excavation phase. LD |
