Abstract: Work on recessed platform sites in Scotland prompted an investigation of similar evidence in Cumbria, much of which had formally been interpreted as `charcoal pitsteads'. Investigations indicated that this particular example was in fact a circular refuge or hut, possibly associated with forest management or the raising of the fell walls. No datable material was found. There is an appendix (125--6) citing other platforms in the area. IH
