Abstract:
A large palaeochannel is being revealed by the erosion of Wentlooge deposits at Hill, Gloucestershire. Quarried stone blocks, medieval pottery and sections of hurdle fishing weirs have been recorded weathering out of its fill. A drain leading into the palaeochannel is thought to be of Roman date, which is supported by the quantities of Roman material scattered on the foreshore. The evidence suggests an erosional retreat of the shoreline, leading to the cessation of medieval trading via Hill Pill.
