Abstract: |
Examines historical and physical evidence for pre-Conquest fabric at Chester Cathedral, comparing elements of the building with the excavated remains of the earliest known church in England, discovered at the Roman town of Silchester in 1891. A church dedicated to SS Peter and Paul is known to have existed in Chester at an early date, but its site has not been identified with certainty. The author suggests that it was on the site of the present cathedral, identifying some vestiges of an early plan form. LD |
