Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
A Roman altar found in Foregate Street, Chester, in 1653 is now kept at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. Although its inscription is now barely legible, it was transcribed the day after discovery. The author discusses previous interpretations of the inscription, based primarily on the initial transcription, and makes his own examination. He concludes that the dedication of the altar is to 'Jupiter Tanarus', representing a blend of Roman and Celtic gods. LD | ||||
