Abstract: Documentary and archaeological evidence show that from about 1600 the castle area gradually became a densely populated and independent township within Newcastle. Developmental plans are shown from the 'old and ruinous' castle of 1580 onwards, and a substantial report treats postmed pottery, metalwork, and textiles, with their documentary context.
