Abstract: Reports excavations in advance of the construction of a by-pass that went on to destroy 130m of the Wall and c. 50m of the Vallum. Pre-Wall activity, the Wall itself (including the collapse of the south face and reconstruction of the elevation), deposits north of the Wall in trench C, decay and robbing of the Wall, and the Wall ditch are all detailed. The vallum ditch, and north and south mounds are discussed. There is an appendix `Soil analysis' by R Payton (41--52) which includes `Other finds' by A Croom (48--50), `Coin' by R Brickstock (50), `Silver hand pin fragment' by C Batey (51--2). Also, `Report on the analysis of the silver hand pin fragment' by P Clogg (53) and `Mortar analyses' by G C Morgan (53--4).
