Abstract: Archaeological evidence includes long cist burials, inscriptions, sub-Roman ditches round one or possibly all of the Yorkshire signal stations, along with artefactual data. Palynological evidence indicates a reversion to woodland after a reduction in agricultural activity. An appendix details vegetational changes c. 400AD shown in pollen sequences from sites close to Hadrian's Wall (69--70).
