Abstract: A paper concerning 1976--77 work at the site directed by Peter Moffat and hitherto only published in note form. There is particular emphasis on the discovery of a stone cist burial and its implications for funerary practice in Roman and post-Roman northern Britain. There is an appendix on `The cist burial from Sewingshields, Hadrian's Wall' by Justine Bayley (67--8).
