Abstract: Work revealing the obliteration of the ditch attached to Hadrian's Wall, by colliery workings. The report is mainly concerned with the shaft sunk to the west of the Roman fort shortly after 1780 until its abandonment sometime between 1847 and 1858. The remains are interpreted in the context of developments in mining technology. There are separate sections on: `The small finds' by A T Croom (153--4);`The animal bones' by L J Gidney (156--7 & 159); and `The clay pipes' by S Speak (158 & 159).
