Abstract: Description and history of the octagonal, four storey structure, once an integral part of the northern mural defences of Berwick which date from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The existing structure is sixteenth century, though the possibility remains that it was built on the foundations of a medieval tower. One of only a few remaining examples of this once numerous structure, its survival is thanks in part to its additional role as a navigational landmark.
