Abstract: Reports excavations on an area of land that was reclaimed during the late-twelfth and early-thirteenth-centuries. Initial occupation on this reclaimed land took the form of a timber building, standing on the north side of a east--west street which may have delineated the Tyne waterfront at this time. Much of this building has been lost to later activity but the remains of a metalworking hearth and associated deposits were found. The timber building was replaced in stone and for a while the riverside wall continued in use; however, by the end of the thirteenth century it had been sealed beneath substantial deposits of ashy waste material from nearby metalworking. The walls of this structure were built in short lengths between substantial timber posts which supported a timber superstructure. Includes separately authored reports on:
