A survey and limited excavation of a riverside site consisting of a submerged stone and timber platform revealed what was identified as parts of the basement of a horizontal or `Norse' watermill which would once have stood on dry land. Three timbers survived in situ, two of which had previously been radiocarbon dated to the early medieval period. Three other timbers had been recorded previously, along with the remains of several timber stakes, five of which were still in situ. A stone surface between and to the east of the remaining timbers was formed from re-used blocks from a Roman bridge nearby. Thirty-nine displaced blocks of sandstone were recorded. A worked timber resembling a water chute was observed lying on the river bed. Modifications appear to have been made to the mill during its lifetime.
