Abstract: A survey of all historic churches in Wales still in ecclesiastical use was commissioned by Cadw to inform decisions on restoration and alterations. This has produced a large body of data on church buildings throughout the Principality which has enabled an overall picture of medieval ecclesiastical architecture in Wales to emerge for the first time. This paper provides an introduction to the content of the survey and presents the principal conclusions which emerged. It concludes with a summary of research priorities that have been identified during the survey.
