Abstract: This article is concerned with the interpretation of a mid 15th-century cycle of wall paintings in the parish church of St Peter & St Paul, Pickering (Yorks). The iconography of the scheme is considered within the archaeological and architectural context of the parish church and it is suggested that the cycle was designed as a form of liturgical calendar. The article raises questions not only about our understanding of 15th-century wall paintings but also more generally about the interdisciplinary interpretation of medieval art, architecture and space.
