Abstract:
In the autumn of 2016, Cotswold Archaeology (CA) undertook an excavation on land at Mill Straight, Southwater, West Sussex. The excavation area was targeted on Iron Age and Roman features identified during evaluation. Four principal phases of activity extended from the Middle Iron Age to the later Roman period. Middle Iron Age features comprised heavily-truncated pits and post-holes, including evidence for a post-built roundhouse. A curvilinear ditch of late Iron Age/early Roman date bounded the south-eastern part of the excavation area. This was replaced by a later Roman ditch of notably regular rectilinear plan, which may indicate continuity of enclosed settlement. It was aligned with a regular layout of field boundaries which extended beyond the limits of excavation. An unurned cremation burial, of Late Bronze Age date, was recorded adjacent to this later Roman ditch. The Roman material record was limited in quantity and range, with a clear dependence on local pottery sources typical of low-status rural sites of this period. Charcoal and poorly-preserved plant remains provided limited evidence of a farming economy.
