Abstract:
This paper is a review of archaeological research on rural settlements and their landscapes in medieval Britain carried out between 2007 and 2016. It follows on from a similar review covering the previous ten years, and was commissioned by the Medieval Settlement Research Group to enable its research priorities to be updated. The principal findings of the review are, first, a need to develop syntheses relating to the period after the Norman conquest, using the ‘grey literature’ reports of developer-funded investigations and data accumulated by the Portable Antiquities Scheme; secondly, the value of encouraging research in regions which have seen relatively few investigations linked to major infrastructure projects; and, thirdly, the benefits of promoting emerging scientific techniques and investigative methodologies that can add value to field research projects. The importance of inter-disciplinary research on medieval settlement and landscapes is also emphasised.
