Abstract: In 1998, following the discovery of previously unknown, below-ground, brick walling during drainage works in a field about 100 metres to the west of Herstmonceux Castle, archaeologist Jenny Compton began a five-year investigation resulting in the discovery of the footprint of a three-phased, rectangular building. Associated features and recovered archaeological material from the excavations strongly suggest a stable and possible coach house which probably originated during the final years of ownership of the 8th Lord Dacre (to 1708) and was rebuilt, or enlarged, during the ownership of the Naylor family (to 1777).
