Abstract: As part of its Monuments at Risk programme, the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority commissioned an excavation of an earthwork feature within the curtilage of Pendragon Castle in Mallerstang. It was undertaken under the auspices of the Westmorland Dales Landscape Partnership hosted by the Friends of the Lake District with the Authority being the partner responsible for delivering the project. Previous field recording had recognised the earthwork as a possible early clamp lime kiln of the type generally known as sow kilns. Excavation proved it to have been a sow kiln and three radiocarbon dates from deep within the kiln bowl enabled it to be matched with the earliest known phase of construction work at Pendragon. A small assemblage of artefacts added further weight to the medieval provenance of the kiln.
