Abstract: The author discusses adapting building conservation philosophy as to be appropriate for individual ancient monuments - emphasising the importance of retaining an atmosphere and tranquillity at historic sites. Rees considers this in particular with reference to two recent pieces of Cadw conservation work at strikingly different late medieval ecclesiastical buildings, at St Winefride’s, in north-east Wales, and at Llanfihangel Ysgeifiog, in Anglesey.
