Abstract:
An archaeological excavation in Great Ellingham, Norfolk, was carried out in advance of housing development in 2020. The most significant findings date from the medieval period, including a post-built timber structure, a metalled surface and waste pits, all within a ditched enclosure. Material culture in the vicinity of these features suggests settlement activity spanning the twelfth to fourteenth centuries on or near the site. These medieval remains are tentatively interpreted as forming part of an enclosed farmstead, perhaps associated with a nearby moated medieval manor identified from aerial photographs. As such, the site is a rare example of an enclosed farmstead excavated in Norfolk. After the fourteenth century, the site seems to have passed to agricultural land use, with ditches of post-medieval and modern date defining field boundaries.
