Abstract:		 This paper describes the different types of base produced during the medieval period and presents the results of an experimental kiln firing. It is suggested that basal thumbing had a functional and economic role in addition to a decorative aspect, and that it aided kiln managment by separating vessels stacked for firing, thus reducing kiln losses caused by glaze fusing.
