Abstract:
Asserts that archaeology is not only concerned with the conservation of archaeological remains for the future but must also produce meaningful research and other benefits for society if it is to continue to be respected as a discipline. Considering how the system under which archaeological work takes place poses problems for the implementation of research programmes, the thesis proposes an archaeological resource management strategy with a predetermined research framework as one solution. Examples of such a research framework have been formulated for the city of Ely in Cambridgeshire.
