Abstract: |
A detailed study of the rescue and conservation of this 14th century ship, intermediate between the Roskilde Viking and the Wasa types of ship, which is the first example to be recovered of the type of trading vessel famous for its contribution to the rise of the Hanseatic towns. The kogge ( Engl cog ) is a double-ended clinker-built vessel 25.5 metres long with stem and stern posts of steeply sloping form. Because of technical difficulties it had to be brought piece-meal to the surface and is now undergoing conservation and reconstruction for display. Technical aspects treated by different special ists include the history and style of the kogge, the dendrochronologlcal analysis which dates it to c AD 1380, the metallurgy of the iron objects associated with it, the display problems, and the geological aspects of the find. |
