Abstract:
Report of an investigation into the present state of sixty-two public-funded organizations in England concerned with non-excavational field survey and recording (eg County SMRs). Responses to the questionnaire are tabulated and discussed under such headings as fieldwork and recording (including air photography), resources, documentary research, etc. Much higher priority is needed for this work, with appropriate funding; the present regional imbalances should be corrected; compatibility of record systems should be the aim; air photographic interpretation much expanded; training of staff assured.
