Abstract:
Technical aspects are treated by: Henry Hodges (pp 33-40) who finds that the medieval potter was always of low status; John Musty (41-65) who presents a classification of medieval kilns and discusses forms of superstructure; and M de Boüard (67-76) who discusses two recipes given by Eraclius (one for clay preparation, one for glazes) which correspond well with N French 13th and 14th century wares. Four writers treat Saxon pottery: V I Evison (77-94), the Asthall type of wheel-thrown bottle; P Rahtz (95-126), catalogue of Somerset pottery from AD 400-1066; B W Cunliffe (127-35), the possible survival in S England of stamped wares from Anglo-Saxon to late Saxon times; and M Biddle with K Barclay (137-65), the recently-recognised Saxo-Norman Winchester ware (several hundred vessels now known). Remaining papers deal with later periods: K J Barton (167-81), the 13th-15th century black wares of N France and the Low Countries; B Beckmann (183-220), the classification of Siegburg wares from 12th to 15th centuries and John Hurst (221-55), the classification of Saintonge pottery of 16th and 17th centuries. The bibliography of G C Dunning's own works is on pp 17-32.
