Abstract: Discusses the archaeologist's responsibility, surveys past practice in recording from Pitt Rivers onwards, considers criteria for recording, reviews current practice and finally describes a model recording system. Few manuals give any help with the problems of what to record or how to do it, but much supervisor's anxiety and director's time can be saved by the use of a well-designed form which ensures that 'no vague and muddled records remain to be settled arbitrarily after the event'. Particular attention is paid to soil description.
