Abstract:
Colour paintings by Ronald Embleton are used in conjunction with photographs and drawings to show the arms and armour of the auxiliary soldiers who provided the Wall garrisons from 2nd to 4th centuries. In particular new information on cavalry equipment has given us a new image of richness and colour, but also treated in detail are the infantry and mixed cohorts, the Hamian archers and the irregular troops, the numeri and cunei.
