Abstract: NZ 450226. Excavations revealed the substantial nature of the later, 18th century mill destroyed by bombing in 1940, and showed the design and working of some of the machinery. (The 12th century mill known from documents can be tentatively located but various disturbances have removed virtually all trace). The mill thrived in spite of water supply difficulties, and breastshot wheels installed at an unknown date required the construction of a leat 111 miles long. Wheel- and other iron parts are figured as well as bone pieces from the button industry housed in the mill.
