The volume comprises over twenty short papers, with Henry Wheeler's foreword on management aspects, and the editors' introduction describing changes over the last twenty years. Various aspects of the work of Cadw are presented by Brian R Morris, John Carr, Richard Avent, J Douglas Hogg, and D R Jones, while the Marquess of Anglesey describes the work of the Historic Buildings Council for Wales. Conservation of religious buildings is treated by J Wyn Evans, of national park monuments by G Yeomans, and of National Trust monuments by David Thackray. Martin Bell puts the viewpoint of an environmental archaeologist. Speakers from museums were H S Green on the crises of publication, of technical services, and of local authority funding; C J Delaney on the local authority museum; and Andrew Laing on the Council of Museums in Wales. David Austin writes on the role of the University, the editors describe the functions of RCAHMW, and C R Musson's subject is recording as a responsibility of the Welsh Trusts, while D G Benson registers the Trusts' work on threatened monuments. Terrence James provides a survey of aerial reconnaissance work and Sian Rees describes the legal sanctions for preservation of monuments. The last set are on presentation: Barry C Burnham on Dolaucothi gold mines, and separate papers on Dinefwr by Sian Rees, J D Hogg, and David Austin. A list of relevant organizations is appended. |
