Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken during the digging of pits and trenches in and around the early 19th century No.1 smithery building. The work revealed that substantial, well preserved industrial archaeology remains survived within the site. The overall layout and the undoubted and undocumented additions and repairs to the wind drains and other structural features could not have been fully understood by the excavation of small trenches. As so often in archaeology, it would only be by open area excavation that such phasing and overall layout could be understood in any detail. [Au(adp)] |
