Abstract: Archaeological recording was undertaken during the excavation of foundation trenches for an orangery, at a site which lay within a farm which incorporated parts of former palace buildings of probable late 15th century date. 17th century foundations and 15th and 16th century kiln pits had been observed at the site. Bronze Age burials, Roman pottery and a possible Anglo-Saxon cemetery had been recorded in the surrounding area. During the watching brief, three phases of archaeological activity were identified. These included early stone building foundations and a later brick-built extension or renovation, both with little associated dating evidence, as well as a metalled road surface which probably related to the 18th or 19th century farm. The remains were preserved in situ after recording. [AIP]
