Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that Early Mesolithic microliths and other flint artefacts had been found at a site to the south, a polished flint axe had been found to the north-west, and Iron Age pottery had been found in the immediate vicinity of the site. A small number of Roman artefacts had been recovered in the area, and a documentary reference indicated that a group of Saxon barrows had lain adjacent to the site. The supposed location of a 9th century battle lay immediately to the south. The medieval period was better represented in the archaeological record, with several SMR entries relating to stray finds such as 12th century pottery, an 11th century belt buckle and a copper plaque. Medieval field systems, a church and the site of a manor house also lay in the area. The proposal site itself had remained undeveloped until the mid 19th century, prior to which it had been arable land. It was concluded that the site had some archaeological potential. [AIP] |
