Abstract:
Desk-based study and a walkover survey of Glastonbury Tor and lands held by the National Trust in the vicinity were undertaken. The summit of the Tor, a SAM, had been excavated between 1964 and 1966. Artefacts of Upper Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic and Roman date had been found, and evidence of 6th century AD settlement had been recorded. A 10th century or earlier monastic settlement, which may have included a wooden church, and evidence of two or more successive 12th-16th century churches had been excavated. Post-medieval features had included possible beacon fires, a possible gibbet, gear hoists and a grave of 1741. Medieval lynchets lay on and around Glastonbury Tor, and a fair was known to have been held to the south. Several areas of medieval field blocks, together with surviving earthworks, were located and described. It was recommended that geophysical survey should be undertaken in several of the surrounding fields, and that a programme of auguring of terraces on the tor should be carried out. Fieldwalking and surveys of earthworks were also recommended. [AIP]
