Abstract:
Eight boreholes were monitored in advance of the redevelopment of the site. All the boreholes showed evidence of later post-medieval activity. Some of this was of 20th century date, evidenced by the reinforced glass in contexts 27 and 28 from Bore Hole 6 and the frequent concrete and cement fragments in evidence in the upper contexts from all the bore holes. The prevalence of ceramic building material fragments and dust, even to the extent of colouring some of the contexts in BH3 and BH7 with a reddish hue, was indicative of demolition layers that may well have derived from structures associated with the victualling yard of the royal docks. This was perhaps further supported by the deposit of brick rubble in BH5. Below the deposits that were likely to have represented demolition layers were deposits of sand, most of which showed no cultural inclusions and were likely to have represented natural deposits. Others, such as [9] in BH2, [20] in BH4 and [30] in BH6 did contain cultural and archaeological inclusions such as charcoal flecks, ceramic building material fragments and redeposited alluvium containing ceramic building material. Alluvial deposits were evident in boreholes 7 and 8 though these were the two furthest away from the river. This may well have been caused by changes in deposition patterns of the Thames, which was also likely to have accounted for the wide range of levels for the top of natural deposits ranging from 1.12m OD in BH1 to 3.80m OD in BH8. Re-deposited alluvium containing cbm fragments and particles was found in [7] from BH2, [12] and [13] from BH3 and [34] from BH7. These deposits may have been indicative of backfilling and levelling of the site associated with its redevelopment after the closure of the victualling yards. [Au(adp)]
