Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was conducted at the proposed development site of the former Playhouse Cinema. The work comprised four trenches across the site. Archaeological deposits were recorded in all four of the trenches, which contained a resource of probable post-medieval date. These deposits comprised the walls and surfaces of buildings and associated debris and demolition material. These features may have related to the 19th century granary building and/or earlier buildings which occupied the site. It was likely that similar deposits may have extended to a depth in excess of 2.5m and that earlier deposits may have survived at this level. It was recommended to carry out an open area excavation to reveal the extent of the structures. Although it was suggested that this resource should not prevent the proposed development from proceeding, however further archaeological work was warranted. Finds included several different styles of pottery, six animal bones, two pieces of shell, one clay pipe stem, one glass fragment and two tile fragments [Au(adp)] |
