Abstract: The additional archaeological evaluation of the proposed amenity lake involved the machine excavation of two trenches specifically targetted at features believed to have existed on the basis of early map evidence. These features consisted of a trackway which was known to have existed before 1839, but which had been diverted in 1847, and possibly the former course of the South Winterbourne river. It seemed unlikely that a mixed rubble, gravel and clay layer identified in one of the trenches represented the former road line, but it was probable that the evaluation confirmed the presence of the former river channel.
