Abstract: |
The site of Castle Hill, Newhaven has been an important centre for human activity since at least the Bronze Age and possibly even the Neolithic. The Level Two Landscape Assesment revealed earthwork features dating to the later prehistoric periods in the form of trenches and gullies as well as modern military features from the First World War. Little is known of the site during the Saxon and medieval periods, however, during the post medieval period military coastal defences began to be constructed. The most significant of these remains included a Palmerston fort with its beach level Caponier and the mid-19th-century Lunette Battery which is also at beach level. The fort was re-used and other features, such as the Emergency Batteries were added during the conflicts of the 20th century. This survey revealed that there are numerous surviving features of military interest of 20th century date throughout the site.[Au(abr)] |
