Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of a cable trench through a Grade II Listed tithe barn, which lay immediately to the south-east of the graveyard of the parish church within the historic core of Stogumber village. Desk top study of documents relating to the village had suggested that the barn was part of the rectorial estate, and lay within a pre-Norman religious enclosure containing a Saxon minster foundation. During the watching brief, two internal walls which were presumed to post-date construction of the barn were recorded. One wall had been cut by a trench or pit which contained loose rubble, including a piece of window glass held within lead strips. Cobbled surfaces were revealed to the north and south of the barn. The barn appeared to be of 17th century date, although it may have contained earlier elements. Roof slates recovered during the watching brief were probably of 18th or 19th century date, as the barn was known to have had a thatched roof in the 17th century. [AIP] |
