Abstract:
A desk-based assessment of a church was carried out, in order to identify the archaeological implications of proposed development work. Two Lower Palaeolithic handaxes, a probable Iron Age spearhead and Roman artefacts had been found nearby, and it had been suggested that Old Street followed the course of a Roman road. A medieval manor house may have lain at the site of the church, whilst medieval quarries and fishponds had lain in the vicinity. The church itself, a Grade I Listed Building, was constructed in 1733. The railings, the gate and a family tomb in the churchyard were also Listed. Five test-pits excavated against the exterior walls of the church were archaeologically monitored, and two possible burial vaults were observed. The crypt was known to contain burials dating from 1740 to 1853. Fairly comprehensive parish records and burial registers existed for the church; it was noted that if the crypt were sufficiently undisturbed to obtain a reasonable named sample, then the burials within were likely to be of national importance. Some disturbance was known to have occurred, but its extent could not be determined. Burials from the churchyard were likely to be of regional importance. It was further noted that there was a low potential for pre-18th century remains at the site, due to disturbance associated with the church and graveyards. [AIP]
