Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in connection with the proposed redevelopment of the site. The assessment concluded that the site had a low potential for containing archaeological remains of local/regional significance. For the prehistoric period, findspots of artefacts showed a relatively low amount of general activity in the area. A possible Iron Age settlement had been identified approximately 1km west of the site. The potential for prehistoric remains was considered to be low due to the character and general low level of known sites of this period in the area. The area of Cowley and nearby Littlemore, Sandford, and Blackbird Leys was the centre of the regionally important Roman Oxford pottery industry. Several sites relating to this industry were known within the study area and the potential for a further site relating to this activity was considered to be of medium potential in the general area. However, due to the amount of building work previously carried out on this site, in several phases, it was likely that remains relating to Roman pottery manufacture would not have gone unnoticed and therefore the potential for such remains was considered to be low. Temple Cowley was known to have originated in the Saxon period and given the lack of known sites of this date in the area the potential for remains dating from this period was considered to be low. There was very little archaeological evidence for the activities of the Knights Templar in the area. The later manor house was less than 500m from the site and an earlier receptory was thought to have stood on Temple Road. Excavations at the neighbouring school showed evidence for medieval activity, possibly associated with the manor, less than 200m from the site. The medieval centre was further to the east and therefore the potential for a further site relating to this activity must be considered to be of low potential. Evidence from the post-medieval period was present in the form of buildings fronting onto Temple Road. Cartographic evidence ranging from 1605 to 1921 showed no buildings on the school site. The potential for any significant buried remains of this period must be low. There was little potential for the survival of archaeological deposits in the north-east of the site where the main buildings have been cut into the sloping ground. The depth of overburden above potential archaeological deposits and the depth of construction for other buildings on the site were unknown and no view could be expressed as to the degree of survival of potential remains under these buildings. However, the possible lack of significant disturbance of large parts of the south and west of the site meant that should any remains be present then they may have survived in relatively good condition.
