Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was carried out on the site, using aerial photographs. Visible archaeological features were located between Pindars Screed and Moss Car Wood. AP Complex 4 and 5 consisted of rectilinear enclosures probably of prehistoric or Roman date. Linear features echoed the nearby site of Swillington, thought to be late prehistoric or Roman. AP Complexes 7 and 8 consisted of linear features, which may have been part of the original landscape and drainage of the carr. Elements of AP Complex did bear morphological comparison to enclosures, possibly of Iron Age date recorded at South Kirkby. The areas of ridge and furrow in AP Complexes 3 and 10 were the remains of late or post-medieval agricultural practice. Some possible archaeological features were identified, but the validity of their interpretation was considered to be low. The assessment concluded that the site may contain prehistoric or medieval remains, which should be considered within the context of extensive prehistoric landscapes nearby. The absence of evidence for archaeological features in some parts of the assessment area was not necessarily indicative of absence of presence. [Au(adp)] |
