Abstract: |
Observations during the conversion of No 81 High Street showed that the building had a stone front, possibly late medieval in date and related to the known early roof structure, into which two brick bow windows were inserted in the Georgian period either side of the central door. Internal observations identified late medieval or early post-medieval beams of a timber framed building with wattle and daub panel infill, re-used in the structure. These may have been from internal framing in the stone building. The observations added to the evidence that the recorded fires in the 18th century town did no affect this length of the High Street. The recorded finds were consistent with the building's use as the hostelry in the 18th century, continuing the earlier use as The Talbot. [Au(abr)] |
