Abstract: A watching brief was carried out when groundworks were undertaken outside of the scheduled area of the medieval moated site for the construction of a roof over an existing swimming pool and associated services. Most of the trenches excavated for the ten foundation pads to support the roof were inspected after excavation. Some of the excavations of a trench for a gas supply from the tarmac drive to the east was observed while it was being carried out. All of the excavation of a trench for a surface water drain from the stream to the west to a point immediately to the north of the swimming pool was observed. A filled in ditch dating from the early post-medieval period was observed both in this trench and in two of the foundation holes running approximately north-south immediately to the west of the pool. A fragment of sandstone chimney and two sherds of post-medieval stoneware were recovered. [Au]
