Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of a proposed development site was undertaken. A Neolithic causewayed enclosure which was a Scheduled Ancient Monument lay to the north-east of the site, and cropmarks representing Bronze Age ring ditches had been observed. Iron Age and Roman settlement, an Anglo-Saxon cemetery and small areas of medieval ridge and furrow had been recorded in the area. An RAF airfield had been constructed on part of the site in 1941. Three runways and several pillboxes, hangars and air raid shelters remained at the site. During a walkover survey, a sherd of Roman pottery was found and marl pits, brick and ceramic pipe fragments were noted. The rubble may have represented waste from the demolition of airfield buildings. It was noted that many of the remaining RAF structures were small, and could probably be left standing within the new development. [AIP] |
