Abstract:
Archaeological monitoring was undertaken during the construction of an access road to serve a housing development within the Highbridge Street Scheduled Ancient Monument. The new road was situated at the southern end of the North Site of the former Royal Gunpowder Factory. Gunpowder had been produced privately at the site since at least the mid-17th century. The area was purchased by the government in 1787, and two buildings were constructed as a saltpetre refinery. This had been remodelled at the start of the 19th century, and further buildings were constructed. During the 1860s, the refinery was converted and used for guncotton production. In the early 20th century, the site had been used for the production of acetone, before becoming a research centre in 1945. An evaluation at the proposal site had revealed the remains of a number of earlier buildings. During the watching brief, further foundations were observed. Remains recorded during the project included the foundations of a surgery dating from 1872, and evidence for the construction of the acetone factory and guncotton building. [AIP]
