Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of a site proposed for new buildings, plant and machinery for oil, chemical and related industrial development identified that it had a limited archaeological potential, although archaeological sites and finds had been recorded in the surrounding area on the SMR. Nearby discoveries had dated from the Bronze Age, Iron Age, Romano-British, medieval and post-medieval periods, the most significant site being a Roman fortlet/signal station at Ince. The former site of Grinsome Farm, which had been occupied in the post-medieval period and perhaps earlier, formed an area of possible archaeological potential within the proposal site itself. The site contained two topographically distinct areas, comprising the vicinity of the former farm and the remainder of the site. The area of the farm had been dry land since the Mesolithic period, and would have represented a topographically attractive location for settlement throughout prehistory and historical times. The remainder of the site had been marshland prior to its reclamation in the 18th century. Signs of a possible medieval or post-medieval field system were noted in the vicinity of the farm during a surface inspection, although the features could also have reflected more recent agricultural activity. It was recommended that an evaluation should be carried out at the former site of the farm. [Au(adp)]
